Alberta Adoptee Activism

If you feel that all Albertans should be treated equally by the Alberta government then read on !

It may shock you to know that in Alberta he human rights laws in Alberta allow for discrimination.
Alberta Vital Statistics, nor the Alberta government have never denied that Adoptee discrimination is taking place.
What they are saying, however, is that the discrimination is justified.
The Alberta Government has a policy of discrimination, we simply want it to end.
The Adoptee never surrendered their rights they were a uninformed party to the adoption.
Birthparent's surrendered all rights, they should not have the right veto the Adult Adoptee's right to their information.
Adoptive Parents have no right in vetoing access to records for any Adult.
The Adoptee must have the following returned upon the age of majority.

    1. All files and contents about or relating to the adoption must be returned to the Adoptee.
    2. The original birth certificate must be returned to the Adoptee.
    3. The government must make a good faith effort to inform the adoptee of their files and rights upon the age     of majority.
    4. The adoptee has the right to revert to their original names as shown on the original birth certificate at no cost to the adoptee.

There are no other people in Alberta that are denied access to their genetic and cultural information by the government of Alberta.
In Alberta Adult citizens are denied access to their original birth certificates and government files on them and about them.
Currently Adult Adoptees are allowed only limited access to their records.
In Alberta Adoptees limited access to adoption records by adoptee's may be vetoed by the biological parents, or the adoptive parents.
Read the Adoption Council of Canada objection to the amendment to Alberta Bill 24, the Child Welfare Amendment Act 2003.
Alberta has a freedom of information act but it has no power over Adult adoptee files.
Alberta has a court system but it has no power over Adult adoptee files.
Adult Adoptees are not asking for special treatment just the same rights that all other Alberta citizens enjoy.
If you believe that all Adult Albertan's should be treated equally, then stand up to the Alberta government by
writing or emailing the Premier of Alberta and the Minster of Child Services.

The Alberta government still views Adult Adoptee's as children, the website and ministry that an Adult Adoptee has to deal with to get the limited information they now are entitled to receive is "Children Services".
This is a demeaning act by the Alberta Government, to force Adults to deal with "Children Services" when the government is aware that an Adoptee must be the age majority to make the request for information.
